Master the art of creating custom patterns from scratch

Course Details

  • Duration: 10 weeks | 40 hours total
  • Class Size Limit: 3 to 4 students for intensive instruction
  • Start Date: To Be Announced
  • Schedule: Saturdays, 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
  • Supplies: Purchased separately. PDF bodice and pants slopers (size M): $10 each
Foundations of Patternmaking
Week 1
Industry Standards & Foundation Skills:
• Key industry terminology & fit model standards • Demonstration: Draping a basic bodice sloper • Measuring, adjusting for shrinkage, and sloper manipulation
Homework: Create a bodice sloper using personal or model measurements and email a photo before next class
Sloper Review & Fitting
Week 2
Pattern Perfection & Corrections:
• Review and feedback on student slopers • Introduction to fitting techniques & pattern corrections • Professional assessment and adjustments
Homework: Finalize bodice sloper and prepare for sleeve drafting
Sleeve Drafting
Week 3
Custom Sleeve Creation:
• Draft custom sleeves for your sloper • Understanding sleeve ease and armhole relationships • Advanced sleeve variations and adjustments
Homework: Cut and sew the sleeve to your sloper
Fitting with Sleeves
Week 4
Sleeve Integration & Fitting:
• Sleeve fitting & pattern corrections • Troubleshooting common sleeve fitting issues • Professional sleeve attachment techniques
Homework: Create a basic long-sleeve top
Basic Skirt Drafting
Week 5
Lower Body Pattern Creation:
• Drafting and adjusting skirts for different body shapes • Understanding hip curves and waist positioning • Various skirt styles and their technical requirements
Homework: Create a skirt pattern and bring a favorite T-shirt
T-Shirt Pattern Drafting
Week 6
Knit Pattern Development:
• Draft a T-shirt pattern based on measurements from an existing T-shirt • Understanding stretch fabrics and ease requirements • Neckline and hem finishing for knits
Homework: Create a T-shirt pattern in your chosen size
Style Evaluation & T-Shirt Construction
Week 7
Pattern Testing & Construction:
• Fit evaluation & construction techniques • Quality control and pattern refinement • Professional finishing techniques for knits
Homework: Sew your T-shirt
Basic Pants Drafting
Week 8
Complex Lower Body Patterns:
• Pants pattern drafting techniques • Understanding crotch curves and leg shaping • Rise adjustments and fit considerations
Homework: Draft pants patterns in various sizes
Pants Fitting & Corrections
Week 9
Pants Perfection:
• Pants fitting session & pattern refinements • Common fitting issues and solutions • Professional pants construction techniques
Homework: Create pants in your chosen style
Advanced Pattern Adjustments
Week 10
Pattern Variations & Style Development:
• Modifying slopers for shift dress, leggings, joggers • Pants with pockets, waistband styles, and more • Portfolio presentation and future pattern development
Final Projects: Complete pattern collection ready for production
